Tau, the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, was written in the old script in the shape of a cross, somewhat like our letter T. In Ezechiel 9:4 God commands his scribe to go through Jerusalem and mark with a Tau the foreheads of all those who lament over the sins of the people. Francis saw in Tau a mark of the life of penance that he and his disciples had been called to. He had a great reverence and affection for this sign and often signed his letters with it (Bonaventure L. Min 2,9).
Into the letter Tau in our logo has been worked another Franciscan symbol from earliest times, two wounded and crucified hands, the naked hand of Jesus across and over the sleeved hands of Francis. Tau is a Journal of research into the life, personality and charism of Saint Francis of Assisi, as recorded in the early sources and understood and expounded in the history and tradition of the Franciscan movement up to the present day. It is published four times a year, in March, June, September and December.
